What is the SBSIF?

The Singapore Brain and Spine Injury foundation (SBSIF) is a newly established non-profit voluntary organization. It desires to improve the lives of people affected by brain and spine injury by supporting and giving hope to brain injured survivors and their families. Brain injury refers to internal injury to the brain that can have temporary or permanent sequelae. This injury can be the result of several causes including trauma (e.g. following a road traffic accident, a fall or an assault), brain tumours, stroke (brain attack), infection and even oxygen deprivation.

Is there a need for yet another charity?

Brain injury is unique to itself. It's devastating effect on both the patient and his family can change the lives of a family suddenly and permanently. It can happen overnight, it can happen to anyone.

There are specialised needs best looked into and supported by a dedicated body. We believe there there should be somewhere to turn to, someone to share the journey of an afflicted person and help lessen the load on the family. The SBSIF aims to educate the public on the far reaching ramifications of brain and spine injury. While 'state-of-the-art' medical interventions are available today, the truth is that prevention remains the only cure to severe head injury .

We want to support our patients and their family to the best of our ability, to educate them on the head injury process, manage expectations and set realistic goals. Apart from moral support, we can cooordinate support from various support groups, volunteers and refer them to professional counsellors if necessary. Resource coordination is also important in directing the family to services and funding available to them in the community.

In short, yes. There is a need to help this specific group of needy survivors and their loved ones.
